Greg Kirby Australian Native Plants Society Biennial Conference 2026

Greg Kirby

Dr Greg Kirby is a past president of APSSA. He has had a long association with APSSA since the 1970s. Originally from New Zealand, on coming to Australia he developed a love of the South Australian outback and was an active member of the Adelaide Bushwalkers for many years. He accumulated a wealth of knowledge about the flora and fauna of the Flinders Ranges and other remote areas. This interest and knowledge stood him in good stead for appointment as a founding lecturer in the Eco -Tourism degree course at Flinders University in 1996. His interest in grasses lead to him being Chairperson of the Native Grasses Resource Group. He undertook his postdoctoral research at the University of British Columbia and subsequent research at the University of Sussex and CSIRO Plant Industry in Canberra. As a Senior Lecturer in Biological Sciences at Flinders University, he conducted significant research on Sturt’s Desert Pea (Swainsona formosa) developing the cultivars Flinders Flame and Flinders Pink. Since retirement he has given much time to regeneration and restorative projects, initially on his own properties and local bush for life projects. With his photographer wife Chris, he has been an active member of Friends of Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park in the Revegetation Project at Balcanoona, in the Northern Flinders Ranges.
