Disturbance is a natural part of almost all ecosystems and has been a key focus of study in ecology since the inception of the discipline more than a century ago. This presentation discusses some important new insights into disturbance dynamics and how some kinds of perturbations can result in ecosystems becoming more flammable over time. The concept of disturbance-stimulated flammability is introduced and its implications for forest and woodland management and fire management are discussed.
